A Biblical Approach to Essential Oils
For many people today, essential oils are not a wellness trend—they are a return to stewardship.
As followers of Jesus, we are called to care for what God has entrusted to us: our bodies, our homes, and our families. Over time, many have grown increasingly uneasy with a healthcare culture that prioritizes symptom management while often overlooking root causes. Prescriptions are common, side effects are expected, and long-term dependence is rarely questioned.
At the same time, Scripture consistently points to God’s wisdom in creation—particularly through aromatic plants, resins, and infused oils used for healing, cleansing, anointing, and daily care. Essential oils, as concentrated extracts of those same plants, offer a practical way to apply ancient, biblical principles of care within modern homes.
Essential Oils in Scripture
The Bible does not use the modern term essential oils, but it clearly references the plants, resins, and oils from which today’s essential oils are derived. These substances were not symbolic alone—they were functional and woven into everyday life.
Frankincense
Used in worship, prayer, and healing (Exodus 30; Matthew 2). Today, frankincense essential oil is widely studied for its support of inflammation response, emotional regulation, and immune health.
Myrrh
Associated with purification, healing, and burial (Exodus 30; John 19). Myrrh essential oil is known for cleansing properties and is commonly used in skin care and oral care.
Cinnamon (and Cassia)
Included in the holy anointing oil (Exodus 30). Cinnamon essential oil is recognized for its warming properties and its support of circulation, immune response, and natural cleansing.
Spikenard
Used to anoint Jesus (Mark 14). Spikenard essential oil is valued for its grounding aroma and is often used to support rest and emotional balance.
Hyssop
Mentioned in purification and cleansing (Psalm 51:7). While the biblical plant differs slightly from some modern varieties, essential oils associated with hyssop-like plants are still used today for respiratory and cleansing support.
Olive Oil (as a carrier oil)
Used for anointing and healing (James 5:14). While not an essential oil, olive oil plays a foundational role in biblical wellness and remains a primary carrier oil for topical application today.
Some aromatic plants often associated with Scripture—such as rose or lavender—are not named directly in every biblical translation, but their use in ancient Middle Eastern culture aligns with the same purposes described throughout Scripture: comfort, purification, and restoration.
How Essential Oils Are Used Today
In many homes today, essential oils are used in practical, intentional ways that reflect biblical principles of daily care and stewardship.
Common uses include:
Making simple salves and balms for skin support
Creating natural cleaning products for the home
Supporting detoxification and cleansing routines
Diffusing oils during prayer, Scripture reading, or rest
Supporting seasonal immune and respiratory wellness
These applications mirror the biblical pattern of using what God has provided for everyday life within the household.
Why Quality Matters
One of the most important considerations in choosing which essential oils to use is quality.
Unlike biblical times—when oils were locally sourced and freshly prepared—today’s essential oil market varies widely. Many products are diluted, adulterated, or synthetically altered, which directly impacts both safety and effectiveness.
This is why I personally choose and trust doTERRA essential oils. Their commitment to third-party testing, strict sourcing standards, and transparency in purity and potency aligns with my conviction that essential oils used in the home should meet the highest standards.
When essential oils are used for yourself or your family, purity is not optional—it is foundational.
