Beat the Winter Blues with Just 2 Essential Oils

As the days grow shorter and the light fades earlier each evening, many people notice a shift in their mood, energy, and motivation. Winter can feel heavier — emotionally and physically — especially for those who are sensitive to seasonal changes.

One of my favorite features of essential oils is how versatile they are. A single oil can be used in several ways throughout the day, which means a one-time purchase can be maximized into ongoing support rather than becoming just another product that sits unused.

I have a bit of a minimalist heart when it comes to wellness. I don’t want a cabinet full of products for every possible situation. I want simple tools that earn their place in my home — tools that can support emotional well-being, daily rhythms, and seasonal needs without requiring constant replacement.

When essential oils are chosen thoughtfully and used consistently, a small collection can go a long way. In this post, I’m sharing two essential oils that you can reach for regularly during the winter months, along with simple, practical ways to use them so they actually get used.

Bergamot and Lavender The Wonder Twins

When it comes to seasonal mood support, bergamot and lavender are an amazing combination. They’re gentle, versatile, and fresh, which makes them especially helpful during the winter months.

Bergamot is often used for emotional uplift and balance. Its bright citrus aroma can feel encouraging when days feel darker or motivation feels low.

Lavender is known for its calming and regulating properties. It supports the nervous system and is especially helpful when seasonal changes affect stress levels, rest, or sleep.

Together, these two oils cover both the energizing and calming sides of mood support. They can be used individually or blended together, making them a practical foundation for daily use throughout the winter months.

The Essential Mood Support Starter Kit

If you know me, you know that simplicity and ease of use are everything! I designed this kit to help you support mood while also giving you tools you can use easily and in more than one way.

The kit includes:

  • Bergamot essential oil (15 mL / approximately 250 drops)

  • Lavender essential oil (15 mL / approximately 250 drops)

  • Fractionated coconut oil (1 fl oz / 30 mL)

This combination allows you to inhale the oils, apply them topically when diluted, and create simple blends without needing a large collection of products.

I’ve included a travel-size bottle of doTERRA’s fractionated coconut oil in this kit to make everyday use simple. It’s most often used in roller blends because it safely dilutes essential oils and is less likely to stain clothing, making it an easy, practical choice for daily application. If you have ever purchased a doTERRA Touch you know the quality of this FCO.

How to Use These Oils Throughout the Day

One of the easiest ways to integrate essential oils into your life is to tie their use to moments you already have in your day. Here’s an example of how you can do this.

Morning: Gentle Uplift

Bergamot

In the morning, bergamot can help support a more positive, energized start to the day. This can be especially helpful during darker winter mornings when it’s harder to ease into the day.

How to use:

  • Place 1 drop of bergamot into the palm of your hand

  • Rub hands together lightly (2–3 gentle strokes)

  • Cup hands over your nose and mouth and inhale slowly and deeply

  • Rub any remaining oil onto the back of the neck

This takes less than a minute and is easy to incorporate into a morning routine. The bright fresh aroma helps to give your brain a sense of life, sun, fresh air and all the things that we miss during the winter months. Bergamot reminds me of walking among a citrus orchard. It’s bright and sunny!

Midday: Emotional Reset

Bergamot or Lavender

Midday is often when energy dips or emotions feel a little heavier, especially when gloomy days seem to drag on, particularly during those long winter days.

How to use:

  • Use the same palm inhalation method

  • Choose bergamot if you need emotional lift

  • Choose lavender if you need calm or grounding

This is a simple way to pause and reset without disrupting your day.

Evening: Calm & Wind-Down

Lavender

Lavender is especially helpful in the evening as your body and mind prepare for rest.

How to use:

  • Use the palm inhalation method before bed

  • Or apply diluted to the back of the neck for a calming effect

This can become a quiet signal to your body that it’s time to slow down.

Using a Diffuser to Support Mood at Home

Diffusing essential oils is another simple way to incorporate them into your daily rhythm, especially when you’re at home. Diffusion provides quick support to the limbic system through aromatic use. It not only enhances the environment with aroma, but also allows the essential oils to be distributed to the brain and bloodstream efficiently.

I typically diffuse 5 drops of essential oil in 300 mL of water, which provides a noticeable but gentle aroma for most spaces.

How to use this kit in a diffuser:

  • Diffuse bergamot in the morning or early afternoon for emotional uplift

  • Diffuse lavender in the evening to support calm and relaxation

  • Or diffuse both together for a balanced blend

  • (caution: never put fractionated coconut oil into a diffuser)

Using Roller Bottles to Stretch Your Dollar

One of my favorite ways to get the most out of essential oils is by making my own roller bottles. Roller bottles make daily use simple and help your oils last much longer, especially when you’re using them consistently.

Because the oils are diluted with fractionated coconut oil, you naturally use fewer drops while still getting regular support. This makes rollers a great option if you’re new to essential oils or want a practical way to stretch what you already have.

Roller bottles also make your oils more portable. I make multiples to keep in my purse, at my desk, and in my medicine cabinet so they’re always within reach.

Simple Roller Blends Using This Kit

Emotional Balance Roller

  • 4 drops Bergamot

  • 2 drops Lavender

  • Fill the remainder of a 10 mL roller bottle with fractionated coconut oil

Calm Evening Roller

  • 5 drops Lavender

  • Fill the remainder of a 10 mL roller bottle with fractionated coconut oil

Apply to wrists, bottom of the feet or the back of the neck as needed.

How Many Rollers Can You Make?

Each 15 mL bottle contains approximately 250 drops of essential oil. From this simple kit, you can make many, many roller bottles and still have oil left for inhalation or diffuser use.

Most people are surprised by how far a small, intentional collection can go even when the oils are used consistently.

Looking Ahead

One of the benefits of starting with a small, versatile kit is that it continues to serve you beyond one specific season. In a future post, I’ll be sharing additional ways to use this same kit so you can continue building on what you already have.

Seasonal shifts can affect us in real ways. Having simple tools on hand can make those changes feel a little more manageable. You don’t need a large collection or a complicated routine — just a couple of versatile oils that you know how to use and can reach for consistently.

My hope is that this approach feels doable and supportive, especially during the winter months. Start with what you have, use it regularly, and allow these small, intentional moments of care to support your mood in a way that feels steady and sustainable.
