Easy Homemade Electrolyte Powder

This time of year as temperatures soar so many of us find electrolytes to be helpful. Unfortunately, they can be really pricey when you buy them prepackaged; especially if you are looking for something clean and natural. Because my husband and I both need to take them every day I began to look for ways to save on cost and make them at home for us.

So after a little investment in supplies and equipment I have my own unflavored mixture that is exactly the same as the LMNT brand so many people use. How do I know? Well, they post their exact recipe on their website and I just copied it. In their flavored mixture they use flavorings but I typically just add a slice of lemon or lime to mine. Fresh cucumber and mint or fresh berries are great too! I have also seen other people add dehydrated fruit powder to theirs but I haven’t tried that myself. You can also add them to any chilled herbal tea for another great option. Because they are unflavored you can pretty much add them to anything you like.

Basic Unflavored Recipe

1000 mg sodium chloride

200 mg potassium chloride

60 mg magnesium malate

Makes 1 serving - add to 16oz-20oz of water

I like the Bulk Supplements brand because they are clean and inexpensive. I purchase the potassium chloride and the magnesium malate from them and then for the sodium chloride I use Redmond’s Real Salt which I have in bulk already.

So that’s it! It’s very easy and inexpensive. In case you want a breakdown here it is: I purchased 1200 60mg servings of magnesium malate for about $20 and 5000 200mg servings of potassium chloride for about $22. I had the Redmonds Real Salt on hand but you can purchase that for about $10 and get around 500 servings out of a 16oz package. The scale I purchased was about $16 and is reusable as are whatever containers you choose to store your mixture in. So you can see that a one time bulk purchase of the supplements that net you more than a years servings can cost you about what roughly 2 months of prepackaged LMNT would cost for one person.

Ease of Use

I have seen people use little containers and I have even thought of purchasing reusable packets to use on the go, but I began just by mixing mine in bulk in an 8 oz jar with a lid and using a scoop from there. You can see from the photo I included that the complete single dose just about filled a 1/4 tsp so I multiplied the amounts and I just scoop one serving out at a time. I have used this for the past 3 months and haven’t really found a need yet for any other distribution method for us.

Flavoring With Essential Oils

So many electrolyte drinks add flavors and I admit I like flavoring also. To flavor mine sometimes I add a drop or two of any of the following essential oils. (Remember, I don’t recommend ingesting any essential oils that aren’t third party tested for purity and safety. I only use doTERRA, purchased directly from the company for this reason)

Grapefruit - Tastes great & is shown to aid metabolism

Lemon / Lime / Wild Orange - Fresh, citrusy and detoxifying

Spearmint / Peppemint - Fresh & Invigorating! Aids in respiratory function too!

MetaPWR Metabolic Blend

(always make sure that any essential oil you ingest is safe to use that way - not all are - but the ones I listed above are tasty and safe) If you want to purchase any of these through me I’ve created a link for you here where you can shop my website. If you are interested in prepackaged doTERRA electrolytes I’ve linked them also for you to check out too! They contain more than just electrolytes, with the addition of deep ocean minerals and come in a liquid form not powder. I do still use these also occasionally because I love them and I get a 30% discount through my loyalty order. However, most of the time these are a nice treat and I use the DIY mix here for our daily doses.

Let me know if you try this recipe and like it. I’ve been able to save quite a bit of money making my own electrolytes and I personally am very happy with the performance and how we feel using them.
