Sabbath Essential Oil Diffuser Blend
Last fall my family switched from observing Sunday Sabbath to keeping the biblical Sabbath from sundown on Friday evening to Sundown on Saturday evening. Since this was a change in our household, I wanted to formulate some new family traditions around it and make the time we were setting apart special. So, I utilized one of the pillars of creating traditions (special scents that align with the event - think of traditional seasonal scents like pumpkin spice, cinnamon or pine trees) and decided to formulate a specific Sabbath diffuser blend that I only use during that time.
This blend has become so special to me and as aromas do, it helps to set the mood and helps us shift gears from the work week into a restful, God centered atmosphere. After using it for a year now I can say that it really does signal our resting time of the week and it’s full of soothing aromas that actually do assist the body with rest, rejuvenation and healing - which is exactly what the Sabbath is for!
I created this blend with oils from the scripture on purpose, to make me think of Jesus when I smell it. (I have always associated Frankincense with Jesus - but maybe that’s just me) I used oils that I enjoy the combination of and have readily available. I could have also used any of the following essential oils: rose, vetiver, cedarwood, cassia, lemon, Roman chamomile, or any premade blend that I chose. Please know you don’t need necessarily to use my formula! I hope you use your own creativity - prayerfully, to create a signature diffuser blend for your own sabbath time that becomes special to your own family as I did. But to give you a jumping off point, or if you want to experience ours my signature blend follows:
My Recipe
In a diffuser with 300 ml of water (roughly 1 1/4 c or 10 fl oz) I add the following:
4 drops frankincense essential oil - warm, spicy & uplifting
4 drops lavender essential oil - fresh, cleansing & relaxing
2 drops clove essential oil - warm & spicy
2 drops cinnamon bark essential oil - warm, spicy & comforting
To make things really easy for myself, I mixed up the blend in a 2 oz dropper bottle. I used one full 15ml bottle of frankincense and lavender, a full 5ml bottle of cinnamon bark, and about a third of a 15ml bottle of clove essential oil rather than dropping and counting. You can use a small funnel and an essential oil bottle opener to remove the orifice reducer. To use this in the same 300 ml of water I add about 10 drops.
I hope this encourages you to either craft your own special Sabbath blend or try implementing your own aromas specific to your family traditions. If you do let me know!
Best
Tina
